What Happens at Your Assessment

What happens at your first assessment

Booking a private occupational therapy assessment is a big step, and it's a lot easier to take when you know what you're actually saying yes to. Here's exactly what happens.

Before we meet

Get in touch by email, phone or text, and tell me briefly what's going on. If it sounds like I can help, we'll arrange a time. If I don't think I'm the right person, I'll say so and point you towards someone who is.

I'll send you a short form beforehand covering your medical history and what you'd like to get out of our time together. It comes back to me confidentially and is stored in line with GDPR.

The assessment itself

The assessment takes around 2 hours and takes place in your own home, wherever possible — because that's where the difficulties actually happen.

We start with a conversation, and it's a longer one than you might be used to. I want to understand what a typical day looks like for you, what's become difficult, what you've already tried, and — most importantly — what you actually want to be able to do. Not what I assume should matter to you. What matters to you.

Then, depending on what you've told me, we'll look at some combination of:

  • How you move and manage day to day — transfers, mobility, balance, grip, stamina, fatigue through the day
  • The activities that have become hard — washing, dressing, cooking, work, driving, caring for others, hobbies
  • Your environment — stairs, bathroom, kitchen, bed, doorways, and whether small changes would make a real difference
  • Equipment you're using now, and whether it's the right equipment
  • The wider picture — mood, confidence, pain, sleep, and how they interact with everything above

You'll usually be asked to show me some of these things rather than just describe them. You're welcome to have a family member, partner or carer with you, and you can stop or take a break at any point. Nothing happens without your agreement.

What you get afterwards

Within 10 working days I'll send you a written report setting out:

  • What I found
  • Clear, practical recommendations — often things you can start on straight away
  • Any equipment or adaptations I'd suggest, and where to get them
  • Whether I think ongoing therapy would help, and roughly how much

The report is yours. You're free to act on it entirely by yourself, and plenty of people do. If you'd like it to support an application for charity-funded equipment, or a local authority housing or adaptation assessment, it can be written with that in mind — just tell me beforehand, and do check what your local authority requires first.

Common Questions

Do I need a referral from my GP? No — you can contact me directly.

Will this affect my NHS care? No. Private occupational therapy sits alongside anything you're receiving from the NHS. With your permission I'm happy to share my report with your GP or NHS team.

How long until I can be seen? Usually 2 weeks. Get in touch and I'll tell you what I currently have available.

Are you regulated? Yes. I'm registered with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) and I'm a member of the Royal College of Occupational Therapists and its Specialist Section for Independent Practice. I've been practising for over thirty years.

Is my information kept private? Yes. Everything you tell me is confidential and handled in line with GDPR. Privacy policy.

What if I'm not sure occupational therapy is what I need? Ring or email and tell me what's happening. I'd much rather have a ten-minute conversation and send you elsewhere than take a booking that won't help you.   'm based in East Lothian and see clients across East Lothian and Edinburgh. I offer home visits / online initial appointments on request and where appropriate.

Travel is charged at 55p per mile plus £30 per hour of travel time.
